Serbian Novak Djokovic moved into the second round of the US Open after a straight sets win over veteran Frenchman Arnaud Clement 6-3 6-3 6-4.
Djokovic never needed to play to his best against a below-par Clement who struggled to keep up with the Serbian's pace. The only real problem Novak had to face was more of his own doing when he landed sharply on his ankle a few games into the third set. He called for assistance from the trainer but after heavy strapping, was able to continue towards a place in the second round.
It's OK," Djokovic said afterwards. "It's going to be good in two days, I'm sure.
"I was thinking more of it than I was really actually feeling the pain, so it's not really a big deal."
Elsewhere in the men's draw, American Andy Roddick was on top form as he swept aside the tricky play of Fabrice Santoro for the loss of just six games, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2.
France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat Santiago Ventura 6-7 (3-7) 6-4 6-2 6-3 and Russian fifth seed Nikolay Davydenko turned around his recent poor form to beat Dudi Sela 6-3 6-3 6-3.
