The match for tennis aficionados in the US Open first round was the contest between 30 year old German Tommay Haas and France's number twelve seed, 22 year old Richard Gasquet. On paper Gasquet should of course have walked away victorious but as every tennis fan knew, the match could go either way.
For four sets there was not much to seperate the two but a faltering Gasquet did not have enough steam to take out Haas with the German wrapping up the fifth set in just 29 minutes to win 6-7, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2.
Former world number one Marat Safin of Russia also notched up a five set victory over the American journeyman Vincent Spadea 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
