Not since 1991 has Great Britain been able to say they have a third round representative in the women's singles at the US Open when Jo Durie and Sara Gomer both reached that round.
World number 87, Anne Keothavong can now also make that claim after a fiesty and gutsy performance against the 25th seed and former quarter finalist here, Francesca Schiavone.
It was a tense encounter towards the end and when down 2-4 in the final set, most wouldn't have been too surprised if Keothavong's more experienced opponent had pushed through for victory but, Anne showed the grit and determination that this summer has taken her into the top 100 for the first time. The confidence that comes along with that breakthrough was evident in her 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 victory.
She will next face recent Olympic gold medallist and US Open 5th seed, Elena Dementieva. Keothavong looks to continue along the same course.
"She's the Olympic gold medallist," Keothavong said. "Not many people can say they have a gold medal.
"She's someone I've never played against before. I've practised with her in the past, and it will definitely be another tough match for me.
"But I've got nothing to lose. I feel confident, I feel fit, and, you know, who knows?"
