
Women's number one seed Ana Ivanovic of Serbia has come through a tough three set battle with Maria Sharapova's Wimbledon conquerer, Vera Dushevina, 6-1 4-6 6-4.
The US Open is the first tournament for Ana since here withdrawl from the Olympics in Bejing earlier this month.
"Just to be here and be able to compete is a great achievement," she said.
Ivanovic will next face French star J Coin who earlier put out Casey Dellaqua of Australia.
Joining Ivanovic in round 2 are Davenport, Serena Williams and Dinara Sadina who all had rather more straight forward victories.
